I am one of Those People who you see around town continuing to wear a mask. When I was down in The Bay earlier this weak, twice people asked me if I was masked because I was concerned about hantavirus. And, like, what is the response they're expecting? My standard short response is always: "I'm high-risk". One of those people replied "aren't we all?" and again I ask: how do you expect me to respond to that? I feel like the very presence of my mask answers the question already. My longer response, for coworkers and friends of friends, is: "After 4 years of post-covid recovery, I'm barely at 70% of my previous lung function. If I get it again, I'll probably end up in an ER. This," indicating my mask, "is my reality now." This always freaks people out. They can't get away fast enough. Every time, they always give me this look like I've hurt them somehow. Hey, yeah, I'm not going to apologize for being mortal in your presence. Fuck all the way off with your delusional bullshit.
