This won't apply in Europe, but for US maps I heavily prefer the USGS National Map over anything Google has ever put out: https://apps.nationalmap.gov/viewer/
It's so much easier to see and read with the selection of colors and more informative. It has all the trails, Forest Service roads, and much more.
Below I have attached most of Denver, CO and westerly areas, first in the National Map and then in Google Maps.

@victorgijsbers@mastodon.gamedev.place Another comparison, the continental US. Look how much more detail is in the National Map. Looking at the Google one, you get the impression the US is completely flat with essentially no rivers. It looks like a map that would be painted on the wall of a baby's nursery. I guess the Google one is where they let their boring, lifeless design aesthetic get in the way of transmitting useful information.
