@oddtail@meow.social Canadians are not all of one mind about this, but I think many of them recognize uncomfortable similarities to dangerous scapegoating of minorities a century ago, and feel they should be Doing Something about it. This is at least a way to offer SOME relief, for some people, without major (and potentially disruptive) action on their side. I'm sympathetic to their desire to avoid a major public throw-down over this, because no one can predict what the outcome of that would be.
