It's not something you'll notice at a surface level - but it's something you'll feel.
A subreddit suspiciously posting too many memes about a TV show. Comments from random accounts supporting or trashing some movement. Social media algorithms promoting one side of the argument and silently censoring others. It's happening, and it's dangerous.
I have my issues with the Fediverse (including some elitism here and there), but I'm so glad it exists and I love being here. (2/3)

Despite the Fediverse being cool and not controlled by one entity, it's still vulnerable to astroturfing. The best we can do is be aware about it. Keep yourself grounded, understand that just because something is upvoted doesn't mean it's legitimate, and call out bad actors. For admins and moderators, check the upvote history of sus posts, they could be alt accounts (this happened on Lemmy). If the Fediverse user is aware of these things, we'll be way harder to trick.
