I am more and more of the opinion that "emergent phenomena" is a crutch phrase devoid of real meaning. Emergent simply means a singularity in the prior, individual factor model has been passed, where the trends break down and no longer meaningfully predict anything. Ascribing more to it than that is to treat the unknown as supernatural rather than simply not yet well modeled.
