I think I was wrong about Angine de Poitrine. I was put off by their silly costumes but I suppose in this day and age you need to do that kind of thing to get noticed It's not the sort of music I'd choose to listen to regularly, but on reflection, I appreciate the art of it. I worry that they are a one trick pony but if they aren't, they could end up being pretty significant in the story of western music In case you aren't aware, this is the nonsense I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ssi-9wS1so

@joeress@mastodon.social I like the take of "this isn't for me, but I see why it's good to exist". I think that perspective is often lacking. I'm in a similar boat. They're interesting, and doing something cool, and I'm glad I experienced their stuff. but I actually didn't really enjoy it personally enough to be music I want to listen to again or at least with any regularity.

@joeress@mastodon.social In recent history we've had several seriously competent musicians who at first glance seem like nothing but a glorified freak show but who actually had some solid chops. ZZ Top, Prince, and Michael Jackson come to mind. As a much lesser (imo) example KISS also joins the ranks. It would be an interesting exercise to come up with a significant list of performers who are extremely good in spite of being very showy.

  • @joeress@mastodon.social yeah I've sen some youtube musicians commenting almost exactly that; they're kinda just doing the layering loops into a "song" thats not really a song... but it kinda works. I have been mulling it over for a bit, and decided I think it's kinda cool I reckon, the music and outfits are just quirky enough that it just works, and the music is still somewhat palatable for the general public. And people actually getting out and doing stuff is just good anyway.

@joeress@mastodon.social they’re masterful. The costumes are some whimsy, and why not? Musically very accomplished. Incredibly good live, especially given the technicality required on the looping. The way they dip in and out of the loops. The drummer playing time signatures that transcend the meter of the loops too. Gosh it’s good.

  • @joeress@mastodon.social They’re almost like the new Frank Zappa or Primus. They’re a band’s band, just like you have people who are a comedian’s comedian, if that makes sense. I like them, but I would also never suggest them to anyone but other music nerds.

  • @joeress@mastodon.social I was introduced to this group a few weeks ago when someone put it on the video player in a VR world. What had been background music up to that point was very much no longer in the background. It's.. interesting. As you and others mention, not what I'd generally listen to, but I'm glad they're out there making what they seem to want to, and with passion. Fingers crossed they find success.
