Is it the phones we carry in our pockets? People can't afford those as prices go up. Chips are too much of a monopoly where it's easier to just keep making the same hardware and collect more money for it.
Capitalism is failing on these fronts, so what's the role of public or cooperative investment in this #AI railway? Where's the middle ground between the gigafactories and the tiny pockets of compute?

This so-called railway bubble is missing shared civic access points. Not just fair datasets, open models, public APIs and privacy-preserving tools. Actual physical libraries where people can learn and move progress further down the road. Local hubs that empower communities are the stations missing in these #AI tracks. Tech is being rushed through public perception to keep us from understanding what we need. And politicians surfing the surface of power don't even want to be aware of it.

@t_var_s@phpc.social Phones, not so much. Apple being unable to keep machines in stock because they're powerful enough to run local LLMs decently, more so.
