and i think another important aspect here is that computers are highly complex general purpose devices, whereas something like a phone or TV is extremely narrow in its uses and interface, so the learning burden is dramatically lower

@beka_valentine@kolektiva.social Also: the trad publishing cycle runs on 90 day credit-or-return at the point of sale and a one year acquisition/publication cycle. But for the past decade software has been pushed out on an annual cycle, rendering third-party commercially written texts obsolete before publication. At which point most publishers and authors give up and go find something more productive to do for a livin g.
