Both games are also just pretending, at first, to have discrete health tokens. OG Zelda 1 only displays health at half-heart resolution, but internally it uses a full byte to store the fractional part of your health -- 1/256th of a heart resolution. These smaller values only come into play later, as you get better damage mitigation and also have a better understanding of how the game works. The complexity of the UI abstraction grows alongside your understanding of it.
