In related news, I got a ThinkPad for work for the first time. Idk about this whole pointing stick thing. It's kinda neat but I feel like I have to concentrate about 10× harder than when just using the big ol' haptic trackpad right below.

@cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family from what i've heard it's the sort of thing you have to make an active effort to use and get used to. i've been using a thinkpad for three years and tbh, i still only use the trackpoint occasionally.

  • @cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family In any case it's great for doing random stuff while chilling on the couch. You never have to move your hands away from the palmrests and your computer is always held in place, whatever position you're in.

@cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family 100x agree. I’ve never gotten on with the famous nubbin and would much prefer their trackpad to be bigger and better. I ordered the ThinkPad X9-14 just hours ago.

@cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family I think it's great that they include both, plus the TrackPoint requires real physical buttons, so you get that option too. I imagine that some people really love it over touchpads if they are long time ThinkPad users and have the muscle memory for it. One thing I've noticed is that the TrackPoint works OK for FPS games while a touchpad doesn't.

  • @cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family Standing besides a server rack and failing hardware and no desk in sight, you start to love the pointer. Holding the TP in one arm and using your other hand, you can point the cursor and press most of the important keys very fast without moving your hand while also stabilising the whole thing exactly on the center mass of the TP. For this, I love it, but in all other normal office situations, it is smoking garbage. Oh, and you can easily loose the red cap while cleaning the keyboard.

@cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family It's not about 'harder' or 'easier' or 'my fingers are starting to hurt'… it's about putting your baseball cap on back to front, lighting up a big cigar and surfing your way down the internet / MS Excel 97 superhighway.
