One definitely does not want to hook an animal by the horns because then it has both a stick and horns to beat you with. I would say it is a churn of sorts though why you would want to carry one up the hill with you makes no sense, maybe they are near the dairy and he just happened to have it. Could it be for a beacon? It is hard to tell what it is made of.
