here's a few uses from TNG
we've got transporter room wall panels, Q's post-nuclear-horror show trial wall panels, ceilings in an underground tunnel, and a whole slew of wall panels in a utility room of some sort

why not ominously backlight a romulan? or turn one into a table? or use it for shadows in a dark hallway? the possibilities are endless in star trek!
