@MTP@musicians.today @elsemusic@musician.social @geoffduncan@mindly.social @Rob@musicians.today @ambergrey@mastodon.social I have used quarters for a pick in desperation occasionally. And of course picks with acoustic guitars can lead to some fun times when the pick falls int the sound hole. 😂

@MTP@musicians.today @elsemusic@musician.social @Rob@musicians.today @GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social I maintain a couple "acoustic guitar player" fingernails (middle and ring), and I have no problem using them on bass—although I confess when I first tried it in my late teens I thought I might rip them off. It quickly became part of my "technique"—I can be walking along fingerstyle and suddenly a couple notes pop out with my nails to accent a turnaround or phrase. I use them on both up- and down-strokes—same on guitars. Of course, I use the same nails on guitar, lap steel, etc. etc. I tend to run stainless roundwounds on bass, so I destroy picks on bass pretty quickly. I tend to prefer the purple 1.14 Dunlop triangular Tortex picks—I can get a decent grip on them, turn to another corner when one wears down too far—but they don't last long either. Maybe two gigs or tracking sessions. I don't really care for the tone, but have used coins—and sometimes that tone is the right thing. My fave atm is a brass noveltry coin from Seattle's Olde Curiosity Shoppe. Another fave are 1960s-era Mexican five peso coin—for whatever reason I have a bunch of those.

@MTP@musicians.today @elsemusic@musician.social @geoffduncan@mindly.social @Rob@musicians.today @GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social Wow! That's a heavy-duty plectrum! I haven't played or owned a bass guitar in decades. When I did play, it was with fingers. (I can't even play acoustic guitar well with a plectrum in spite of more experience there.) When I create virtual bass parts, I still can feel myself playing the real thing -- in fact, in my imagination, I play much better than I ever did. 🤷🏼‍♂️𝄢
