Wrote about today's GitLab restructuring / "workforce reduction" announcement, and ended up digging around in version control for both the GitLab and the 37signals public employee handbooks to help illustrate my thoughts https://simonwillison.net/2026/May/11/gitlab-act-2/

  • I love your point about the Jevons paradox... Anecdotally, I have been way busier in the last 6 months than I ever was, but it's also a whole different kind of job and maybe one where there are fewer practitioners.

    @simon@fedi.simonwillison.net Huh, I wonder why the 37signals cross-functional, independent team thing was removed. That was one of the clearest, shortest ways to put it, and it sounded like the future (and it still sounds like it today esp. with reorgs and small teams running circles around big companies with AI-based disruption promises) Did your research produce any reason why?
