Why aren't more people using Codeberg or something open source

2026-05-14 01:27 UTC

cross-posted from: lemmy.today/post/52903710 Since Microsoft owns Github, Gitlab is Corp owned now since 2022, why are so many who preach privacy or using Linux, etc, still using a MS product? Genuine questions. I’m assumming either familiarity & simplicity with GH or difficulty migrating elsewhere?

Because there hasn’t been enough discomfort to disrupt established workflows yet. I remember when Sourceforge hit that tipping point. Microsoft and Gitlab likely do too.

We've been happy with gitea, argocd and openproject. After 8 years in a vendor locked EKS situation from all angles, I would never go back.

I am not really the target of your question, because I am not a developer of something in particular. I mainly use git to backup and track my Linux and Docker config. There are a few unfinished side-projects as well, but nothing really interesting. I personally chose Gitlab over Codeberg mainly because of the ability to create private repos. The repos don't contain any private info but I don't saw any real benefit for the general public either. However, this decision was a couple of years ago. As of late, I want to use git also for other stuff that potentially contains data I am not willing to share. Therefore I want to setup my personal Forgejo instance. I like the idea of Codeberg. My goal is to host everything I really want to keep private on my personal instance and move everything else to Codeberg.
