@cstross@wandering.shop @AlisonW@fedimon.uk @susankayequinn@wandering.shop Back in 1990/1 I had a client whose offices on a midlands business park were done over like that. They had huge rolling steel shutters on all the downstairs windows and doors but the thieves brought along a hydraulic jack to force their way in by brute force. They went through all the Dell PCs in the training rooms, taking just the ram.

@christineburns@mastodon.green @AlisonW@fedimon.uk @susankayequinn@wandering.shop In 1990/1 in Watford, the SOP for the RAM gangs was to hit office parks. Find an open window at the back and send in a team of kids, under the age of criminal responsibility, with mailing envelopes. They'd strip all but one RAM stick and put the rest in a mailer which would go out the next morning. Then waltz out past security: "sorry, guv, I was following me football, accidentally kicked it through the window". Absolutely untouchable!

@christineburns@mastodon.green @cstross@wandering.shop @AlisonW@fedimon.uk @susankayequinn@wandering.shop By weight, RAM was more expensive than gold. Even in 1995, I paid 450AUD for 4MB.
