New thread to continue our trip. We started in eastern Anatolia and now we have crossed over into Georgia. Our only destination was Wardzia (ვარძია). The fortress was hewn into stone and was able to support up to 50’000 soldiers in defence against the Seljuks, apparently. But then two thirds fell off after an earthquake and Georgia went through the Ottoman rule, the Mongol rule, the Russian rule, three years of independence, the Soviet rule and capitalism and here we are. Some monks still live there, in a secluded part of the fortress, maintaining the church.
