    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I only wish for one day I didn't see something that reminds me of this. I don't think there is a word in this tweet that isn't perfect.

  • @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk what in the world would make them think that they would win against Serena, that's insane. It makes me remember the movie "Battle of the Sexes"

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk can't imagine why. Thank you for thinking about it. And telling us you're thinking about it. Seriously.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk There's a real survey of people who think they can win a no weapons fight against various animals from geese to grizzly bears. The percentages show some people clearly have never seen animals outside of books with cardboard pages.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I mean, she does double fault some… but I wouldn’t call that “winning” a point. And it’s not like she’d have to serve anywhere near max to beat (checks notes) 99.9999999% of men. Figure if she wanted to beat nine 9s of guys, she 💯 would. (A quick google says 1/8th of men are apparently familiar w/ the term “double fault”.) Just for fun, here are some random double fault stats. Looks like Venus did it more at one point; can’t find Serena Williams’ rate for some reason.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I wonder many think they could get a hit on a Major League Baseball pitcher Edit—Or more apples to apples, could they score a point on Roger Federer

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk The phrasing of the question in the small print at the bottom doesn't mention the word "game", which in tennis can be as short as four points long. The question might not refer to a game, but a whole match, which consists of multiple games. Winning a single point in a whole match is perhaps not likely, but certainly plausible — a double fault on one of Serena's serves would be sufficient.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I could win a point… if she double-faulted on her serve!

  • @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk How often do players double-fault in tennis? That's the only way I get a point against Serena Williams. That or she takes pity on me.

    Open ##2960474

  • @ech@qoto.org @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk Yep. I think the only way we could get a point is if she was A.) Showing Off or B.) Laughing too hard.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I maintain, like the "could you fight a wild animal" discourse, that if you nullified most of her advantages like training and strength and such that it's possible my wild incompetence would put a ball past her. That's less misogyny and more putting my faith in dumb luck and heavy handicapping though. There's absolutely no way a fair match goes my way.

    @pikesley@mastodon.me.uk I think in an entire /match/ I might be able to get a single point though. Surely she'd get bored and let one shot slip by Losing 72-1 seems reasonable
