@seatek@hard.blue When I lived in the UK I would walk to the shops on the high street. It was maybe a quarter mile one way. It was safe day or night. At night only the pubs and Chinese take-away were open. Here however, it's a mile or more depending on what's required and the walk is risky. Some areas have sidewalks, some don't. Driver's only notice pedestrians if they hit them.

@apples_and_pears@mastodon.world @seatek@hard.blue I know somebody that has to drive 20 miles one way to go to the nearest grocery store. Europeans simply have no idea just how big the United States is and unless you live in maybe a half-dozen cities, a car is required to stay alive. Even in ATL where we have a subway and bus service and bike trails and the lot you still need a car because MARTA and the bus don't run frequent enough nor cover 90% of the area that you need to go to.
