I know somebody that has to drive 20 miles one way to go to the nearest grocery store. Europeans simply have no idea just how big the United States is and unless you live in maybe a half-dozen cities, a car is required to stay alive. Even in ATL where we have a subway and bus service and bike trails and the lot you still need a car because MARTA and the bus don't run frequent enough nor cover 90% of the area that you need to go to.

@mike@cyberczar.org @seatek@hard.blue In Seattle light rail and bus lines are based on ridership (which boils down to commuter demand - routes and times). Others are not accommodated unless they happen to live within walking distance of public transit that runs that time of day. Often a trip that take 30 min by car takes 1 or 2 hours by public transit (assuming the start and end points are accessible by public transit.
