Astonishingly with gyro and trackpad aiming combined, Quake III (which has no controller support) is shockingly playable with the Steam controller.

Trackpad calibrated to about 180 deg of in-game rotation via an edge-to-edge swipe and gyro calibrated to 4.5 in game rotations for every 1 controller rotation for those curious. Could probably do with higher sensitivity but so far I've been used to that and it's working well enough for me.
