#Bookstodon, I need your help! What is your absolute favorite, not-problematic, public domain detective story? I have a new jailbroken kindle to go out into the little library and want it to be a little jewel box of @gutenberg_org mystery books. Edit: Particular preference for non-white, non-straight, non-male authors. Natch. :-) Please boost! #books #fedihelp

    @jonobie@social.coop @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social is Dorothy L. Sayers too obvious a suggestion?

    @jonobie@social.coop @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social The only mystery books I've really read was the original Hardy Boys books. A few of those are in the public domain now, I think. Since I don't have specific suggestions, may I instead offer https://standardebooks.org/subjects/mystery? @standardebooks@mastodon.social takes public domain books and makes high quality ebooks from them.

    @jonobie@social.coop I'm a big Agatha Christie fan and quite enjoyed her Mysterious Affair at Styles. Ditto The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Both available from @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social

  • @jonobie@social.coop @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social You might also want to look at Standard ebooks. They clean up and put proper covers on public domain ebooks. https://standardebooks.org/ebooks

    @jonobie@social.coop @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social Recently read Metta Victor's The Dead Letter from Standard. One of the first detective novels (1864). Hit the spot despite being High Victorian Pulp.

    @jonobie@social.coop @gutenberg_org@mastodon.social I don't know that this is such a thing as "non-problematic." Heh.
