I'm honestly quite disappointed with /r/vtubertech. I expected better than this from the VTuber community. I get that this is an *extremely* widespread myth, but people are getting irrationally angry at the idea that maybe Apple just has a really good face tracking model and it's not the camera. Literally all they have to do is just... cover up the depth camera on an iPhone and see how the tracking still works practically the same, with just the front selfie cam. But oh well, I guess I'll just write and release "VBridger for macOS except it's using the webcam" instead ๐

@lina@vt.social I wouldn't be surprised if you gave them the proof and they wouldn't be convinced anyway :neocat__w:

@lina@vt.social It is CPU-only capable or does it require apple silicon features ? Edit: my macOS/iOS knowledge is really lacking

@lina@vt.social classic reddit unfortunately. i know apple bought faceshift many years ago and we were using that for high fidelity vr, the failed second life successor. however weights are definitely modern. im not surprised to hear this though and really hope you can figure out a way to make this work! legendary find.

@lina@vt.social huh, does that framework actually work? It wouldn't surprise me if those are stubs to let iOS apps linking to ARKit load on Mac at all ๐ค

@lina@vt.social this makes sense intuitively! afaik, the secret sauce to face ID is an infra-red camera- you could slap any old face tracking algorithm (albeit calibrated to those values) and i don't see why you wouldn't get functioning face tracking! reddit is...doing what they do.
