@pitz@mastodon.social - the issue was that afpd is reading from a config file in an unexpected location: instead of /etc/netatalk/afp.conf, it's /usr/local/etc/afp.conf.
I'd love for someone to explain why that makes any sense, or where in any documentation for Netatalk or Raspbian I should have known to check for this.
I only discovered it by accident when running "ps -ef" to check if the daemon was actually running. After wasting hours last night, to say that this pissed me off is an understatement.
