Saying "this isn't who we are" definitely frames state violence as an anomaly and not the status quo. I feel like some people's eyes have been opened up by recent events but many more just want to go back to "normal" when they didn't have to see or think about the violence.
I can't count how many times I've seen "ice didn't kill people under Obama, they followed the law before" etc.

@uneasylistening@c.im @independentpen@mas.to Agreed. Some eyes open but others using safety pins to keep them closed. State violence is scary and most Americans who don't know or don't want to know our very long history of violence might be feeling a little trapped right now. Is it really possible the government may come after them too? They don't want to comfort that possible reality. Safer to go with all the fed agents are really good, law abiding people underneath it all.
