@independentpen@mas.to I hear you but here's a better way to do it that doesn't allow those who willfully close their eyes to reality: This is who we are but we don't have to be that. We can be better.
Yeah? It acknowledges the reality and incorporates the rejection. Not as catchy for the press quotes, but its truthful.

@fulanigirl@mstdn.social @independentpen@mas.to it could even be "this shouldn't be who we are" or "this doesn't have to be who we are". Saying "this isn't who we are" definitely frames state violence as an anomaly and not the status quo. I feel like some people's eyes have been opened up by recent events but many more just want to go back to "normal" when they didn't have to see or think about the violence. I can't count how many times I've seen "ice didn't kill people under Obama, they followed the law before" etc.
