@imalcolm@mastodon.social We lived out in the country (New York state), and had a "party line" that we shared with several other households. Yes, people could listen in. Kinda awful.
Got the first private line when we moved to Arizona in the late 1970s. Also our first push-button phone..it was a muted yellow and hung on the wall.

@janerationx@mas.to I rememberer hearing about party lines but never experienced them. The closest was when we got a second phone on the same line, so my sister and I would always be interrupting each others' calls, saying "Get off the line!" I think I was in my late 20s before I moved in to a share-house that had a push button land-line. It seemed so fancy, haha!
