@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place I don't know how minimal it really is now we're beyond the initial phase of dx12 and vulkan, the new stuff is pretty foundational in engines and I don't really see gpu-driven everything going away. Lots of the issues (e.g. barriers) from the era of that talk are much less problematic now too, due to hardware improvements. Imo the biggest issue is really just the way marketing fits in with what is really rather boring non-flashy technical changes.

@dotstdy@mastodon.social Oh it's clearly not going away, what's done is done, and we're tacking back to (IMHO) some PSO-free sanity. I'm just increasingly left feeling like, was a lot of this initial complexity ultimately worth the cost. Sadly we don't seem to be seeing any similar moves when it comes to the seemingly endless aliasing/UB/language 'feature' train.
