It have been mentioned time and time again that "free" was a terrible choice of word for "free software". Many, these days, use "libre" just to differentiate the free as in freedom in contrast with free as free beer.
Unfortunately, "open" also comes with its own issues, as many believe "open source" and "OpenSource" are the same thing. Many companies use the former synonymous to "source available".
But using "open" is less problematic than "free" imho. Hence my suggestions.
