@Inumo@dragon.style And now it's writ large why folks ask for recommendations rather than "just googling it."

@Inumo@dragon.style alternate 2023: "Do you want to know something? Many people who do web searches want to know things. In this article, we will discuss how to find information on the Internet so that you can learn more information." "Before the Internet, people read books and articles in order to learn information. However, with advances in technology, finding information has gotten easier than ever. Now you... (insert annoying ad here) ...only need to do web search in order to find information. But how do you do a web search?" *continues to go on for twenty paragraphs' worth of filler and advertisements*

@Inumo@dragon.style interesting how the "google is free" retort of the 2010s ran up against "right wingers learning SEO"

@Inumo@dragon.style @breadandcircuses@climatejustice.social Google seems like little more than a shopping site these days. I’m so tired of looking for information and getting nothing more than an endless slew of Buy this Buy that Oh this will show up in your Facebook later and also your spam folder…. 😖

@Inumo@dragon.style I think it's very funny that the phrase "Google is free" is so popular at a time where Google has become near useless for finding good information.

@Inumo@dragon.style I remember owning a beautiful set of encyclopedias. Pretty useful for a few years until information changed. Does anyone else remember those?

@dalias@hachyderm.io 2023-02-09 14:01
@Inumo@dragon.style And this is all because the idiots at Google don't understand the role of a library/librarian: pointing you to relevant sources and helping you evaluate their provenance. Not telling you their opinion on what the answer to your question is.
-
@JensHannemann@mastodon.online 2023-02-09 14:36
@Inumo@dragon.style I'm actually OK with that. But the order should be reversed. Your best bet is either a library or a friend. In that order.

@notthathelpful@thegreendragon.online @Inumo@dragon.style I sometimes miss those days when having a question as a kid was a community scavenger hunt. "Jimmy said his dad grew up in Morocco. Let's check out his bookcase." "I bet Becky's mom will know how far it is to Mars. She knows all that stuff."

@Inumo@dragon.style @fasel@ohai.social Well… Wikipedia and stuff still exists. It's only search that's utterly useless nowadays You can still find information faster on the net than in paper books - but for both things you have to know where to look.

@chaostheorie@kolektiva.social 2023-02-10 14:39
@Inumo@dragon.style I think Wikipedia is still good, too! Obviously not because you should take things written there as true by themselves, but because it will almost always provide a list of useful primary or secondary sources to consult. Similarly to what Google might once have done...

@TimWardCam@c.im 2023-02-11 11:03
@Inumo@dragon.style But the "friend" these days may be an expert you've only ever "met" online on social media. Yes, you have to discriminate between good and bad sources ... but that's what primary school history tried to teach in the 1960s (I don't know how that goes these days).
