Have any of you (yes, you, reading this) ever heard of the Fermi paradox? It's been on my mind recently. You see there is some (and let me put emphasis on this) *some* evidence that the Kepler telescope *may* have discovered a biological signature in an exoplanet's atmosphere (K2-18 if you want to look it up). Now, what i want to talk about is why, if the day comes we do discover life I might be smiling, but I would not be cheering

    The Fermi paradox is, simply, "if the universe is so old and large, why haven't we found anyone else out there yet?" There is nearly 75 years of discussion on the topic, and no awnser yet - but I personally subscribe to the great filter theory. A postulate that there are certain steps in the development of life that are necessary for more complex life to develop, but incredibly unlikely to occur. The original theory outlines 9 possible bottlenecks - one of which is an unknown future cataclysm or event that could wipe humanity out. The discovery of cellular life would invalidate 3 of these points.
