The Fermi paradox is, simply, "if the universe is so old and large, why haven't we found anyone else out there yet?" There is nearly 75 years of discussion on the topic, and no awnser yet - but I personally subscribe to the great filter theory. A postulate that there are certain steps in the development of life that are necessary for more complex life to develop, but incredibly unlikely to occur. The original theory outlines 9 possible bottlenecks - one of which is an unknown future cataclysm or event that could wipe humanity out.
The discovery of cellular life would invalidate 3 of these points.
