What?! Apparently 11 train operators have already been nationalised. This is great news! Why haven't Labour been banging on about this? Great Western Railway to be nationalised in December https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/may/08/great-western-railway-nationalised-december #trains #ukPol #nationalisation

@feijoa@mastodon.org.uk I suppose because that would require admission that the great neoliberal economics cult was WRONG re privatisation.

@feijoa@mastodon.org.uk suggest reading a little more rail press. Nationalisation could be a good thing but the governments are treating Great British Railway like Brexit. The responses from them with respect ot electrification, capacity increases etc., are poor at best. The railway is loosing many of it knowledgable staff as the governement does not even except the current model is boom and bust. Since CP7 there has been little work so people are leaving the industry in droves. Your wish list in sensible but seemingly not to the DfT/government tgqt are just trying to cut costs. In a safety critical environment, that means only one thing... we await a disaster!

@feijoa@mastodon.org.uk a bit early. To get the full benefit, despite the ROSCOs who own the trains, there needs to be the impact of a proper national system so rolling stock purchases are not just for one area and released stock can easily be used elsewhere. Platforms aren’t the same height. main line curves aren’t;t the same so shorter carriages are needed on midlands main line. Couplings are not scandalised so one train of a different type can pull a broken down one.

@feijoa@mastodon.org.uk This is a thing (largely COVID induced) which started under the Tories (because the railway companies were no longer viable). Other people could comment in much more detail than me (I think I heard about it from David Frankal on YouTube, and I see those videos are still up).
