My headcanon is that Gandalf's staff really is just a walking stick but he hardcore pretends it's a magic focus, up to and including pretending to trick a guard into letting him into Rohan with it, so that if an enemy ever does waste effort depriving him of it he can catch them unaware by being completely unaffected

@stellarskylark@solarpunk.moe Pretty convinced that most of the documented powers of the Maiar are just glamours and social engineering to keep the mortals off-balance and unnerved… and it's beautiful that in most cases that's all they need.
