Not much requirement for magic back then, it seems. But it amazed me that some people, even if only a few of those cashiers, seriously believed that for some trivial sum one could buy a wooden box that would convert scraps of waste paper into genuine banknotes. But it helped me understand today's newspaper reports of widespread gullibility and fraud.

@pacman@swiss.social So what you’re saying is that the real magic was people’s faith in ‘get it rich quick’ schemes—and the only thing that’s changed since then is the upgrade from wooden boxes to NFTs? 😂
