In chapter 5 of the Vimalakirti Sutra #MastoDharma, I decided not to cling to the notion that V is dissing disciples up to bodhisattvas. We read a lot of sick burns on disciples last week. This week it’s tutoring Manjusri on who a bodhisattva is. Before that, V was fully present in lay society. It’s the same picture. Vimalakirti’s buddha field supports and enlightens all. He doesn’t change, but how we see and respond to his teachings (including comportment as well as discourse) reveals to us an opportunity to be better. This pisses off and embarrasses some folks. You need to hang with someone who lights you up? You got it. You need someone to thwack you with a big stick? You got it. Buddha knows what’s up.
