@flexion@oldbytes.space @davidseidl@mstdn.social FWIW, the SGI Onyx2 deskside was certainly heavy (roughly 75kg, IIRC) ... but Thumpers / Thors (Sun x4500/x4550) were almost exactly the same weight at just 4U tall - that is A LOT denser.

@mbpaz@mas.to @flexion@oldbytes.space I'll admit I didn't do as much with Sun gear at that scale. I ran into a lot of Sparcstations and IPCs/IPXes, but didn't get to the bigger stuff from them until later in my career - and then it was all rackmount datacenter stuff. The research computing datacenter folks I know will deny to this day that they almost toppled an entire rack of heavy gear by unloading it in the wrong order!

@mbpaz@mas.to @flexion@oldbytes.space @davidseidl@mstdn.social SOOOOOO heavy! Ugh. (Fantastic machines though. At least for my problems/code, completely trivial to get 95+% user CPU across 14 procs...) Edit: Oh, I'm thinking of E4500's, never dealt with x4500's.
