Moment of clarity: I can describe the dice mechanic of Blue Planet to tonight's #ttrpg group, two of whom are very new to the hobby, as blackjack. You want to hit the target number without going over. If your target number is a 5, you want to roll a 5 exactly on the 10-sider. A 4 is still good, a 1 is barely effective, and with a 6 you missed it by =that= much. Get a ten and you hurt yourself trying. It's different in that each die, or card, is counted separately, rather than making a hand. Your Aptitude Pool is the number of cards you get to flip to try and find a winner, ignoring any cards that bust if you have a good one.
