Black folks deserve better than the so-called "fediverse"; I've seen folks who've spent years trying to carve out a space for themselves here only to be driven away by the constant white supremacist bullshit, the "nice" casual racism, the refusal to listen, and the smug whitesplaining reply-guys -- it is miserable! FOSS and nerdy spaces are huge holdouts of racism, misogyny, and unexamined biases (just look at the communities around, or maintainers of, many open source projects), and the "fediverse" is absolutely no exception to that for every (white) person who pokes their nose into the fediverse and then posts enthusiastically about how "nice" it is here, there's a Black person or other person of color who takes one look at the federated timeline, or gets a few shitty replies with no pushback from anyone, and just nopes out because it is so fucking white round here by all means continue to use the fedi -- because at the end of the day it is one of the only places on the net that's a genuine alternative to big corpo ad-riddled bullshit -- but have no illusions about how unwelcoming this place can be to folks who are not white; bear in mind how much work there remains to be done, and how attempts to do that work by Black folks have historically been met with stony silence or downright hostility
