Any young plants or seedlings in the meadow that aren't grass or dandelions will be at their critical growing stage, if you're not cutting their tops off by the mowing you'll be flattening the grass and leaving bits behind and both will have the same effect as a mulch cutting out sunlight. The first couple of years of a no-mow meadow can look a bit underwhelming, the grass is established and asserts its dominance given half a chance and mowing this time of year works in the grass' favour. If you want faster results you could sow seed after your first mowing or plant plug plants now but there's a lot to be said for leaving it alone to find out what turns up of its own accord.
