@Koochulainn@mastodon.ie you got me. 🤷‍♂️ My best guess would be that it diverged due to the fisherman and sailors who talk about and deal with buoys regularly not having much interaction with the engineers and shipbuilders who concern themselves with buoyancy, and were also more likely to communicate with their counterparts across the Atlantic.
