OK Fedi/nerds. I need a UPS for my NAS/router/modem (only). It's a 4-bay Synology (DS420+) which the data sheet says only 30W when active, so I only need something like 100W and like 5ish minutes (? enough to clean shut down the NAS) of runtime. So, what do you recommend? Constraints: The area this stuff is in is very cramped and smaller is great. Obviously I need/want the USB communication feature for the NAS. But otherwise "not stupid expensive" and "not crap without a real company/warranty"

@Greg@social.coop look for Eaton or APC devices - but for the serial or USB interface you may need a larger model, the small ones often drop that. I've got one of each, the APC needs a new battery (despite "NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE") and has no monitoring; the Eaton has a USB interface.

@Greg@social.coop I had a UPS for my Synology NAS for years, rarely needed. A few years in we had a power cut and I discovered the hard way that the battery had almost no capacity left, but the NAS was fine. I replaced the battery. A few years later the UPS emitted a puff of magic smoke and died. It was an APC model. I decided I'd rather live with the risk of disk corruption than a fire risk so I haven't replaced it. Later the disk did die, but I think it was due to a burst of EMC from the router next to the NAS. I reformatted the disk in a PC and it was fine. But I lost my data. Since I use the NAS as a backup and fast local media source all the data existed elsewhere and I just repopulated the NAS from there (which took a couple of days). I hope that helps.

  • @Greg@social.coop I don't have a specific model to recommend, but I definitely recommend going with APC. Any UPS will have its battery(ies) degrade over time, though, so keep that in mind. And probably test the clean-shutdown functionality once a year or something.
