@orangeacme@fosstodon.org I use the git extension to automatically backup notes to my gitlab instance. I keep an Obsidian vault to document everything I do to my house. The git extension pushes those notes to @gitlab@mastodon.social. This is now outside of Obsidian, but then I run some CI/CD to build the notes into a @zensical@fosstodon.org site that I can reference or share. All the editing and whatnot happens in Obsidian, though.

@orangeacme@fosstodon.org I love how you've phrased this. We have Markdown files. We choose to view those files through the lens of different apps, one of which might be Obsidian. File over app, every time!! Since you've asked, the only Obsidian features I recommend are for convenience. It doesn't make sense to tie yourself into features that only work in one app. Eg. hotkeys for shifting lines up and down. Natural Language Dates plugin.

@orangeacme@fosstodon.org I only have 4 community plugins on my vault, and the two I couldn't live without are Dataview and Tasks. Tasks is a really robust way of managing todos. Dataview, with a small learning curve, lets you create views of files from anywhere in your vault based on specific queries. For example, I have a "home page" canvas shows: files I've edited in the last 5 days, files with specific tags, and files that haven't been accessed in over a year.

@orangeacme@fosstodon.org I've been using obsidian for years and am only now getting into the database stuff because I want to build a complete #DnD toolset for when I'm running games. But stuff that is super helpful in my work vault is dataview, tasks and templates. So if you want to start customising, those are good places to start I feel.
