@erici I've been the subject of at least one rather careless defederation incident. Irritating, but that's life. I agree that the larger instances are probably too large. If ever I'm called upon to recommend an instance for somebody, I'll probably recommend finding one outside the two-three largest. I'd call the current situation liveable, if ever a large enough number of people believe they are blocked or defederated unreasonably, the fediverse might fracture. 1/2

@erici @hakona@im.alstadheim.no The other side of that coin is that petty tyrant admins who will censor at the drop of a hat are reluctant to defederate from larger instances since it isolates them more than it works as a punishment for individuals. Personally, I prefer a more hands off moderation (barring obvious stuff like naked bigotry, spam etc.), I don't want to always be wondering if my opinions align with what the mods think I should think. In that way some of the larger instances serve as an anchor.
