My impression is that the elipse & hamburger choices are about saving screen real estate. It's seen most frequently in those UIs that are set up to "adapt" to a wide window on a computer desktop versus a narrow window on a phone. I get the aversion to maintaining two separate versions for different contexts, but they way they're doing it nowadays is just maddening. >

Our IT ticket website just really really really wants you to view the knowledge base before you file a ticket—to the extent of •hiding• the ticket page for things that the knowledge base •doesn't cover•. Like filing a request to copy docs to archives. The only way to access that page is to put the name of the db in the search field. I spent a freaking •hour• looking for it before asking somebody. If their objective is to save staff time: FAIL
