Public transit needs to be publicly funded. Eliminate fares. Reduce or eliminate policing. Eliminate fare gates and financial services for shit like clipper etc…. The money needs to go to providing essential services and maintaining the infrastructure to reduce failures to the absolute minimum down time.

This war with iran is going to drive more people to public transit as well. We need to shift our thinking about all of this now. What do I mean? The prosperity that has shored up and papered over the gross inefficiencies in our society is eroding fast and the war with iran is probably the beginning of the end of petrodollar dominance. This means that all the batshit fucking crazy bullshit people have believed about capitalism is going to be exposed as the bunk that it is. BART running off of fares is one of those things. Dependence on marketrate housing is another. These hugely inefficient ways of delivering this shit were shored up by prosperity. With that gone they aren’t going to function at all. Notably they’ve already been falling apart for years at this point while everyone is in demial about the cause. This war with iran is gonna expose these weaknesses even more. With bart right now it is high gas prices pushing more riders while the system is inadequately maintained and failing almost daily.
