Benson Kipruto was the fall 2021 Boston champion, but he has not fallen out of contention since then. He won in New York City last fall, Tokyo in 2024 (with that 2:02:16 PR), and Chicago in 2022. He was 3rd in the two Bostons after his 2021 win (April ‘22 and April ‘23) and this is his first time back in Boston since then. He knows how to win, he knows how to win in Boston.

Now we start getting into some unknown quantities. Milkesa Mengesha (11/MENGESHA) has a PR of 2:03:17 from Berlin in 2024, where he won in his biggest victory to date. He’s also won in Shanghai (November 2025) and Daegu (2023) but very uneven results in deep championship races (e.g. 10th in London 2025, 6th at the Budapest World Championships 2023 marathon, 10th in the 5,000m at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics).
