Now we start getting into some unknown quantities. Milkesa Mengesha (11/MENGESHA) has a PR of 2:03:17 from Berlin in 2024, where he won in his biggest victory to date. He’s also won in Shanghai (November 2025) and Daegu (2023) but very uneven results in deep championship races (e.g. 10th in London 2025, 6th at the Budapest World Championships 2023 marathon, 10th in the 5,000m at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics).

Cybrian Kotut (3/KOTUT) has run Boston a couple of times now, he was 9th in 2024 and 3rd in 2025. He finished second to Mengesha in Berlin 2024, which was his PR in 2:03:22. He’s won a handful of second-tier marathons like Amsterdam, Hamburg, Firenze, Krakow, and Paris, going back to 2016. He trains with Kipruto and is a relative of Martin Lel, a multi-time London winner in the 2000s.
