It was a gay almost certainly autistic person who created a machine that could break the Nazis' Enigma code and helped defeat fascism.
Everyone benefits from the diversity, tolerance and inclusion that strengthens none authoritarian countries, including those who use the freedom they have to reject and persecute people who are different to themselves.
Just wanted to add that. 😃

@happyborg@fosstodon.org This is true, and had Alan Turing not existed, WWII likely would have cost far more lives. You'd think people could show a little gratitude! But I worry about justifying our existence by pointing out how we can be useful to everyone else. It feels a bit like this Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer meme about deviants only being tolerated if they can be exploited. I'd rather we were treated decently even when we lack superpowers that make us a profitable hiring decision.
