@atpfm Re: Pay-to-unlock hardware: In the 90s I supported a few hundred 3D workstations. SUN, SGI and HP (some with Itanium!). It was common practice to have to pay extra for built-in-but-locked hardware. $5K if you purchased the option pre-enabled, or $16K after the fact, for a proprietary dongle to unlock the built-in hardware. 50% of it would go forever locked and unused, I was told.
